When Jesus reached the spot, he looked up and said to him, "Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today." So he came down at once and welcomed him gladly. --Luke 19:5-6

I love this image.  Zacchaeus, a tax collector, and short in stature, decides to climb a tree just to see Jesus pass by.  Jesus calls him out.  "Zacchaeus!  Get down from there.  The party is at your place!"  Zacchaeus, for all his faults, was a wealthy man.  I'm betting it was a pretty good party.

Of course, there's a lot more going on than a good party; but, I've been about making sure that we don't forget the party.  Like most churches, ours does a lot.  When I noticed that people were getting tired, I thought, "Man, we need to party more."   Where is it written that Christians aren't supposed to have fun?

I love this image of Jesus too--even though it originated from a movie spoof on the church. It seems like most pictures of Jesus are very serious.  (After all, this is serious business that we are about.)  But I imagine that Jesus must have been a pretty engaging personality; and, I'll bet he didn't win all those hearts with a dour look on his face.

Over the past couple of years, our church has made a concerted effort to put a little fun and fellowship in all that we do.  Instead of a "church spruce-up day",  we have a "Work and Worship Weekend".  Instead of a "pledge drive" meeting, we host a "CCC Bucks Dinner".  We play wiffle ball with the local Ecumenical Ministry.  We host "Music Nights".  Our "Summer Music Series" features local bands and homemade root beer! It's a fun and inexpensive night out for the whole family.

We are challenging assumptions about how Christians should go about their work.  At the heart of it all is a desire to love our neighbor and to build relationships within the congregation.
